There is no need to wait until a person is near death to receive this Sacrament. A careful assessment of the serious nature of the illness is sufficient. The Sacrament may be repeated if the sick person recovers after the anointing but then becomes ill again, or if the person's condition worsens during the same illness. Additionally, a person should be anointed before surgery if a serious illness necessitates the procedure.(cf. Rite of Anointing, Introduction, nos. 8-10).
