  • FAQs

    • Who chooses the Godparents?
      • The child's parents are responsible for choosing the godparents. However, they cannot serve as godparents for their own child's baptism. A godparent should be someone who will play an active role in the child's life and serve as a positive example of living the Catholic faith.
    • How many Godparents should we have?
      • It is recommended that you choose two Godparents for your child; however, you may opt for only one if you prefer. If you select two Godparents, one must be male and the other must be female, and both must meet all the necessary requirements.

    • What are the requirements for Godparents?
      • Parents cannot serve as godparents for their child’s baptism. However, grandparents may be eligible if they meet all other requirements.

Godparents must be at least 16 years old and practicing Catholics who are registered members of a parish. They must have received the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and First Holy Communion, and they should regularly attend Mass, receive the Eucharist, and participate in Reconciliation. Non-Catholics and unbaptized individuals cannot serve as godparents.

If married, the godparent’s marriage must be recognized by the Catholic Church. Those married civilly or in another Christian tradition must have their marriage recognized before serving as godparents.
    • Who needs to attend the Baptism Prep class?
      • Both parents and godparents are required to attend the class. We encourage godparents to participate alongside the parents in the same preparation classes, if possible.

Please note that this is an adult class, and children should not be brought along.

Godparents who live out of town must attend Baptism Preparation classes at their own parish. A letter confirming their participation in another Baptism Preparation class should be sent to Saint Andrew. This letter will validate the godparents' readiness to fulfill their responsibilities.

    • What if my child is over 9 years old?
      • If your child is over 9 years old, they must participate in OCIA adapted for children.
